Deep Learning/AI—How It Is Used in Four Applications Webinar

The use of deep learning/AI for vision/imaging applications is growing. Past Webinars have covered how deep learning/AI can be used for vision/imaging applications.

This webinar, presented by David Dechow, Principal Vision Architect with Integro Technologies, and Priya Ravi, main scientist at Integro Technologies, will cover where deep learning is working currently by exploring four application areas.

• Food product: Defects and foreign material is extremely difficult to detect due to the subjective nature of the defects and the variability of the product. Deep learning proved able to perform the detection and classification for this inspection.

• Labels: A customer had graphics on a product line that had thousands of variations. The task was to positively differentiate specific labels relative to the remaining entire sample set. By using deep learning, the different graphics could easily be training by example, and the classification was completely reliable over the huge sample set.

• Medical device: Debris and foreign material had to be identified on a medical device for both safety and aesthetic reasons. Because the surface of the object(s) was highly variable and flexible, deep learning was chosen for flexibility and the ability to easily add defect cases to the inspection.

 Pharmaceutical packaging: A pharmaceutical product package had to be validated as containing graphics and print on the label that was not deformed or damaged. Many different types of products contained similar labeling but with significant variation in label color and position of graphics. Deep learning was used because of its ability to segment and classify the features under changing imaging conditions.

David is a well-recognized figure in the machine vision industry with over 35 years of hands-on engineering and design experience in machine vision technology and systems integration. He just joined Integro as their Principal Vision Systems Architect from FANUC America Corporation where he was Staff Engineer for Intelligent Robotics/Machine Vision. For 26 years prior, David was the founder, owner, manager, and principal engineer of two successful machine vision integration companies. Mr. Dechow is the 2007 recipient of the AIA Automated Imaging Achievement Award honoring industry leaders for outstanding career contributions in industrial and/or scientific imaging.

Mr. Dechow is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars worldwide, and has had numerous articles on machine vision technology and integration published in trade journals and magazines. He has been a key educator in the industry and has participated in the training of hundreds of machine vision engineers as an instructor with the AIA Certified Vision Professional program.

Priya Ravi

Priya is a Senior Application Engineer at Integro Technologies where she works on developing machine vision solutions for various manufacturing industries. She has 8+ years of hands-on experience in solving complex image processing problems. She has a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Louisiana State University, specializing in Computer Vision. Her thesis research focused on 3D Reconstruction and Stereo Vision geometry. Prior to joining Integro, Priya worked as a Machine Vision Engineer for Beena Vision – Trimble, where she developed machine vision solutions for automated wayside monitoring in railroad industry. Her interests include 2D & 3D Image processing, Object Detection, Machine Learning, Neural Networks & Deep Learning.
