Food Safety Solutions in New Machine Vision Applications

Stricter Demands are Driving Machine Vision Deployment in Food Production

Reported on AIA, the Food and Beverage Industry “has been a key buyer of machine vision equipment” since the beginning of this advanced technology. With stricter demands for consumer and food safety, “an increasing need for efficiency, quality, and regulatory compliance is driving further adoption of new machine vision technology.”

As AIA reported, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) instituted a mandate for food processing operations to “implement 100 percent track-and-trace systems for production” approximately three years ago. With alarming “E. coli and other recalls,” food processors are beginning to fully commit to implementing the necessary technology to attain full traceability.

OCR Tools: Solutions to Attain Optimal Track-and-Trace

To achieve optimal track-and-trace, food safety processors will need to integrate “barcode readers, inspection systems, optical character recognition (OCR), and more.” As explained by Cognex, “optical character recognition (OCR) tools in a machine vision system is a proven, mature way for manufacturers to track food and beverage processing from the raw materials stage to packaged product.”
