How Is Thermal Sealing Created?
You can achieve thermal sealing in several ways:
- Band Sealers -These sealers are commonly used in continuous pouch sealing implementation. The pouches stay in motion during the sealing process as the band sealer transfers the heat onto the pouch seal.
- Platen Heat Sealers – This uses heated plates compatible with the pouch seal area, to transfer the heat to the package seal area as it moves through a conveyor line.
- Ultrasonic Sealers – Generally used in paper pouch applications, the technology uses ultrasound energy to produce vibrations and friction to form heat that is applied on an already adhesive-covered paper seal area. The heat melts the adhesive to form the pouch seal.
- Bottle Caps’ Induction Sealing – Widely used in bottle caps applications, the method uses an adhesive-covered liner facing the bottle and is moved underneath an induction heater after being screwed. The liner is heated to melt up the adhesive to form a seal eventually.
The Thermal Seal Inspection Process
Thermal seal inspection is achieved using a visual thermal system such as Infrared technology, camera system, and software.
The sealed product is immediately scanned on an infrared camera system for analysis. The seal images may show different colors. The colors indicate the many levels of heat on the just sealed product. Some spots could be cold while others are very hot. To achieve effective sealing, you have to observe an even and consistent color distribution on the sealed spot image.
Uneven color distribution usually means the pouch seal has not been properly sealed.
The Importance of Thermal Seal Inspection Process
Thermal seal inspection ensures proper sealing of products to avoid moisture absorption, breakage, or unwanted consequences. It may also be a regulatory requirement that must be met.
